Allison M. Smith studied historical oboes with Frank de Bruine at the Koninklijk Conservatorium Den Haag (M.M., B.M.), modern oboe with Alex Klein and Ray Still at Northwestern University School of Music in the Chicago area (M.M.), and modern oboe and baroque oboe with Marc Schachman at Vassar College in upstate New York (A.B.).
She participated in masterclasses with Alfredo Bernardini, Peter Kooij, Sigiswald Kuijken, Gonzalo Ruiz, and Stephen Hammer on baroque oboe; and John de Lancie, Nicholas Daniel, and Hansjörg Schellenberger on modern oboe.
She has performed under the direction of Richard Egarr, Werner Ehrhardt, Jane Glover, Roy Goodman, Ton Koopman, Reinbert de Leeuw, Gustav Leonhardt, and Elizabeth Wallfisch, and has appeared in ensembles such as the Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra, l'arte del mondo, Chicago Opera Theater, Combattimento, Le Concert Lorrain, Holland Baroque, and the Wallfisch Band.
